SWAYAM is a government-initiated program in India that aims to promote access, equity, and quality in education. Its objective is to provide high-quality teaching and learning resources to all individuals, including those who are disadvantaged. SWAYAM aims to bridge the digital divide for students who have not had access to the digital revolution and the opportunities it brings.

The program achieves this by utilizing an indigenous IT platform that hosts a wide range of courses, from 9th grade to post-graduation, which can be accessed by anyone, anytime, and anywhere. These courses are interactive, created by top teachers in the country, and are free of charge for residents in India. Over 1,000 carefully selected faculty and teachers from across the country have contributed to the development of these courses.

The courses available on SWAYAM are divided into four categories: (1) video lectures, (2) downloadable/printable reading materials, (3) self-assessment tests and quizzes, and (4) online discussion forums for clarifying doubts. The program also utilizes audio-video and multimedia elements to enhance the learning experience, along with state-of-the-art pedagogy and technology.

To ensure the production and delivery of high-quality content, seven National Coordinators have been appointed: NPTEL for engineering courses, UGC for post-graduate education, CEC for undergraduate education, NCERT & NIOS for school education, IGNOU for out-of-school students, and IIMB for management studies.
